El Pulgarcito Pupuseria is a Salvadoran restaurant tucked away in a small plaza on W Chapman Ave in Orange, CA. Finding it can be a bit of a puzzle—some navigation apps might not point you there right away—but the detour is worth it once you settle in. The atmosphere is straightforward and homey, the kind of spot where you can expect food made fresh to order rather than something rushed from a fast-food line.

The focus here is on traditional Salvadoran comfort food, with pupusas as the standout. The pupusas come in hearty portions, generously stuffed with ingredients like chicharrón, cheese, and beans, and are served with the typical accompaniments of curtido and tomato sauce. Beyond pupusas, breakfast items such as plátanos with eggs and chorizo make it a solid choice for a morning bite. Drinks like horchata and aguas frescas, including pineapple and tamarindo flavors, complement the meal well and add an authentic touch.

Service tends to be warm and attentive, giving the impression of family-run care without feeling overly formal. Since the kitchen cooks your meal fresh on the stove, there is generally a bit of a wait, but it’s clear that the pace prioritizes quality over speed. This makes El Pulgarcito Pupuseria a good spot for a relaxed lunch or dinner where you can sit back and enjoy the flavors without rushing.

The crowd here ranges from locals familiar with Salvadoran cuisine to curious newcomers willing to seek out a more genuine experience. It’s not a flashy place but offers solid value, especially if you appreciate homemade textures and balanced seasoning over convenience. On weekends or around mealtimes, it can get busy, so a bit of patience is useful. Bringing a small appetite or sharing is recommended since the pupusas are filling.

For those exploring local eats in Orange or craving a casual Salvadoran meal, El Pulgarcito Pupuseria provides a straightforward, authentic experience grounded in traditional recipes and welcoming service.

My family and I just had dinner for the first time at this restaurant and loved it! Our server, Gaby, was wonderful and the food delicious! We’ll be back.

El Pulgarcito is definitely worth a visit once you actually find it! My Apple Maps couldn’t even locate the place, so I had to switch over to Google Maps. Even then, I circled around for a good 10 minutes because it’s hidden in the back in a little plaza. So just a heads up: don’t give up, it’s there! I even bought some snacks while I was there, but of course the main event was the pupusas. I ordered the jalapeno & cheese and the regular cheese pupusa. Portions are no joke these things are filling! I was only able to finish one and took the other to go. Everything was hot, cheesy, and super comforting. The curtido and salsa on the side tied it all together perfectly. Prices are very reasonable too, especially considering how generous the portions are. The atmosphere is unpretentious with that true hole in the wall vibe, which makes it feel even more authentic. I went with my gf who’s Salvadoran, and she gave this place her stamp of approval. Our server, Ayli, was so sweet and really on top of everything, making sure we were well taken care of the entire time. This place gets busy, and with food being made to order, patience is key. But if you’re craving authentic Salvadoran pupusas, this is the place. Just plan ahead for parking and navigation, it’s a hidden gem in more ways than one!

Pupusas were delicious and fat. Great drinks also. The Agua de Tamarindo was bomb. Price was decent for the size of the pupusas....I highly recommend

The service, and food were great! The food tastes homemade. What’s great is they also provide you with everything you need to add to your pupusas. The staff were very welcoming. And what’s cool is that it actually takes a while for the food to be ready but that’s only because this place is not a fast food joint, so they actually are making your plate right off that stove. You just can’t get something better than this el Salvadorian restaurant. I left really satisfied, and will be coming back.

Whether dine-in or take out, El Pulgarcito always delivers! Aside from Balompie in San Francisco, if you find yourself in this area and craving true authentic El Salvadorean food, there’s no need to look elsewhere. I made that one mistake in Antioch, Ca (1-Star review on Yelp & Google) so trust me- this trip made up for it 110%! As for food experience, we usually order chicharron con queso or just plain loroco but this time, we opted for a couple of new items on the menu: Rigua con crema and a breakfast plate. A large Horchata order can be shared for two. Friendly and attentive staff even though at the time of visit there were a couple of large parties (6+) she made sure we were good! The overall set-up of the restaurant is almost like cafeteria style :)

Great food - jalapeño and cheese pupusas I liked the most. I tried shrimp and cheese ; chicken and cheese pupusas as well, for side Curtido salad and warm salsa roja was so good with pupusas. All were just amazing. Tried the dessert- fried plantains, they were yummy as well. You have vegan option as well. Would like to try vegan pupusas on my next visit. There’s a small snacks section as well to buy few Salvador snacks.

Pupusas were VERY good! The wait for the food was a little long but def worth the wait! They have the regular tomato sauce and they have a spicy sauce that’s very good! Def recommend this spot. Clean atmosphere and friendly staff.

Personally enjoyed the food. Would order ahead of you're in time crunch as the food is made to order. Thankfully I have an hour lunch so I didn't mind 30 minute wait. They are very generous with the curtido and great customer service
